Cavallino Restaurant Pizzeria
When two of Sydney’s most well known Italian chefs, two hatted Giovanni Pilu from Pilu at Freshwater and Lido Russo from Walsh Bay’s Ventuno Pizzeria, create a Pizzeria it is bound to be grand and deeply Italian.
This was the brief, when the restaurateurs fitted out the Glenn Murcutt designed building in Terrey Hills that formerly operated as Il Piemonte. Their vision was to create a grand Tuscan inspired dining experience with honest family trattoria values at it’s heart.
The building has a stately and imposing front entrance leading guests through the large glass doors to the front desk. To add subtle elegance to the entrance ornate wrought iron outdoor chairs are combined with rustic timber tables on a hardwearing table base, sourced from Italy, offering durability without sacrificing style.
The interior is a series of five rooms separated into dining, bar area and open Pizza kitchen all separated by large exposed timber beams. To accentuate the Tuscan country feel the floors are tiled in oversized Italian tiles and exposed sandstone brick walls. The simple trattoria style timber and rattan dining chairs are mixed with oversized timber tables with minimal table decoration – cleverly avoiding over complicating the interior and allowing the food and the exposed pizza oven to add to the character.
The bar area is a favourite spot for guests to for a pre or after dinner drink. By combining cosy armchairs with elegant leather sofas and timber bar tables the bar area has an intimate atmosphere for casual mingling.
These seasoned restaurateurs have a formula for success combining simple and earthy Italian food with a well thought out interior. Carefully selecting the furnishings to complement and accentuate their Italian vision they have created an atmosphere that sees it regularly packed to it’s rustic wooden rafters!
