Unstable tables giving you the wobbles? Don’t be jinxed with Gyro

Instyle Seating has serviced the commercial furniture market for over 20 years. With many of our hospitality customers as local operators in the beautiful Northern Beaches, the outdoor and alfresco commercial furniture market has traditionally constituted a large part of our core business and product range. We are proud to have many well -known and well-respected cafes, restaurants, clubs, pubs and bars as our loyal clientele, returning to us time and again as they grow, expand and evolve.

We have worked together to create furniture solutions ideal for the Australian lifestyle and climate. After 20 years, we have seen many products try, fail and disappear. We know what will work inside and out, what will be an investment to last the distance as opposed to a false economy, and what will specifically endure our tough Sun, Sea and Surf…and our annoying uneven surfaces! What we don’t like is letting our customers down or having customers return to us with problems they cannot seem to fix, with one common one being wobbly tables!

There are very few more frustrating challenges and one that will genuinely spoil a dining experience, than a table that wobbles every time you put down your drink, cut your food, lean on it or knock it by accident. We are glad to have solved this through our association with Gyro Bases, a WA-based company, which has developed a series of specialist table bases that truly solve table instability. Many of our customers, including the famous Doyle’s group of restaurants, the Gelatissimo Gelato chain and local premier independent operators like The Bower Restaurant in Manly, have made the strategic choice to use Gyro bases every day without regret. Smart operators realise an up-front investment in quality and technology is a long-term gain in today’s incredibly competitive and fragile hospitality industry. Using Gyro bases in their businesses avoids the frustration and wrath of customers who quite rightly, see their dining spend as a financial, emotional and time investment, and one will a very marginal return if spoiled by an unstable table . Informed operators consider mitigating such risk a true economy in the long run. Customers are very quick to judge and critique and can afford to do so with so much competition for their time, money and approval. They are not shy in sharing their “bad” experience, quick to place negative reviews and feedback on social media and show these feelings by not returning, quickly and easily moving on to the next (very close) venue. Those who “get” that so much of a “great meal out” now is actually not about food at all, avoids failure by using simple things like stable tables.

Gyro Bases were developed through the same industry experience and longevity as Instyle Seating’s. Founded by Hans Isle, a design engineer with more than 20-years’ experience in designing, manufacturing and promoting outdoor furniture products and self-stabilising tables. A forthright man, strong in his convictions and dedication, developed his solutions to table instability in stages since 2002. Listening to customers’ very valid complaints and frustrations, he has continued in his endeavour to offer genuine, credible, safe and trust-worthy solutions with his range of Gyro bases. He promotes his products with authenticity, honesty and full disclosure. He does not shield the reality behind “half-truths” or false claims which simply fall apart in the real world. Many table bases “claim” to be easy to use, fully stable, product and safety tested. In practical, real-life working conditions, they are not.

Gyro bases were borne to offer Han’s “total solution”. Follow the links to video demonstrations proving how easily they work. They are truly simple and easy to use and do the job they claim to do, ideal for outdoor dining with conditional permits such as in Manly, where restaurant and cafés may be required to store furniture indoors outside of operating hours and setting up fresh each day on challenging surfaces.

The Gyro base, topped with a standard sized table top, is easy for staff to carry outdoors at the start of service and assemble for perfectly stable dining, even on rough, uneven cobbled curb sides, walk ways and pedestrianized areas. At the end of the day, staff can easily dismantle, fold, carry and store the tables, even if working on their own. An ideal solution for so many cafes, bars and restaurants operating out of quirky, reclaimed, restored and re-zoned industrial buildings, roads and walkways, not traditionally used or set up as hospitality areas.
From his many years in the business, working closely in the real world of hospitality, Hans is frank in his warnings against the marketing hype and empty claims of other “self-stabilizing” base designs. He cautions to take their claims with an open eye and a large grain of salt…

Pay more attention to what they are NOT telling you. Ask key questions like:

How does the base work in the real world?

How easy is it to use?

How has it been safety tested?

Has it been tested for use, durability and longevity in the Australian climate?

Does it pass accepted commercial stability test?

If no “human action” is required for stability, how is it achieved?

If it is “award winning”, what are the actual prizes awarded and for what?

What different surface levels and variances will it actually take?

Many bases can claim perfect stability. This is true IF the force used is from the top….They don’t tell you they destabilise from force applied sideways. One prescribed safety test for tables it they must not topple when a 20kg load is applied 5cm from the edge. The Gyro base may be the only one on the market to absolutely comply with this test. It has a moving leg, the stabilising leg, which achieves stability when locked in place – but you must lock and unlock it to allow stabilisation. It does require some human intervention. A table base may claim to be sound, safe and product tested. They don’t tell you the testing is not for corrosion resistance and wear and tear. It may be fit-for-purpose at the start, but does not last in the real world. Lab testing cannot always replicate field testing. A table base may claim to have won awards and be “top-ranking”. They don’t tell you the award was for aesthetic appeal, functionality or being a “good idea”. Awards should be of value to have credibility in commercial furniture manufacturing, such as improving safety. A base claiming to be stable on “almost any surface” is a statement that needs real definition. Look at how much the feet of the base actually move. For stability on outdoor areas with cobblestones, the base must be able to take variances of up to 40mm and still be stable. The Gyro base may be the only one to offer this degree of stability. One that is stable on “almost any surface” with feet adjusting to only 5mm variance will not cope with footpaths, sidewalks and outdoor areas in the real world of hospitality.

As a man who values integrity and honesty above an easy sale, Hans offers the Gyro bases with sound, clear, supported proof that they work! Many of Instyle Seating’s happy customers are further proof Gyro Bases have solved the problem.
Key points to consider are:

Is the surface area uneven?

Will staff need to setup each day?

Do I need them weather proof?

Do I care about the comfort and dining experience of my customers?

How much are all these factors worth to the success of my business?

If any of these key points are of concern to you, then consider Gyro Bases for your business. Instyle Seating has sample and demonstration models in both the Alexandria architectural and design showroom and at the Brookvale hospitality showroom and head office. We are happy to provide any advice and help to make the decision so much easier for you. And we are good friends with Hans!
